California Native Plants
We’re excited to offer our local Motherlode community a small selection of California native plants this Fall 2026!
What began as a God-led passion for forest health restoration on our property has evolved into something more. While embarking on a journey to learn more about being a good steward of the land - we fell in love with native plants… in the wild and now, on our property. The knowledge & information we have gained through the Columbia College Forestry & Natural Resources Program, UC Climate Stewardship & Naturalist Certifications and simply observing the natives while hiking in the Sierra Nevada Range - has guided us in our native plant selection.
We have specifically selected some fire/deer-resistant native species that will do well in the Motherlode region, as well as support pollinators and wildlife. The plants will be available to purchase individually or as bundled Pollinator Fire-resistant garden kits (limited supply).
Why Plant California Native Plants?California native plants have evolved over time with our local climate - weather and region, soil, and wildlife. Gardening with native plants can have several benefits including:
Water Conservation - Many native plants need minimal water and irrigation once they are established (after a year or two) which can help save money as well as conserving one of California’s vital, limited resources.
Less Maintenance - Some attention and care is needed for California native plants to thrive, but in comparison to non-native garden plants - you can plan on using less water, less time pruning, little if any fertilizer and no pesticides.
Increased Pest Resistance - Since California native plants have been created for this region and have been adapting and developing for many years, they have developed their own defenses against many insect and mammal pests as well as diseases. Not having to use pesticides - which can also kill beneficial pollinating insects - reduces or eliminates garden toxins out of our streams and watersheds.
Fire-adapted Qualities - Many California native plants, but not all, have fire-resistant qualities - making them a good choice for high wildfire risk areas. Keep in mind that there are no plants that are completely fire-proof, but there are a lot of native plants that are deemed 'fire-safer' retaining hydration and lacking high levels of volatile oils and/or resins. It's important to maintain/remove any dead debris and keep plants hydrated, as well as plant thoughtfully and create defensible space - especially in the first 0-5 feet of your home.
Wildlife & Local Ecology Support - Living in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) in the Motherlode as development replaces natural habitats, requires intentionality when it comes to gardening with natives to support wildlife and your local ecology. Native wildlife has been proven scientifically to prefer native plants and a lot of species are what they call ‘specialists’ which means they rely on a certain type of native species to survive. You are supporting your native ecosystem when you garden with California native plants!
“The wilderness and the dry land will be glad; the desert will rejoice and blossom like a rose. It will blossom abundantly and will also rejoice with joy and singing.” - Isaiah 35:1-2
